The Story:

Poor Emma is a pup with a problem. Her human, George, constantly misunderstands her. No matter how hard she tries to please him, it's just "Bad! Bad! Bad!" all day long. Tired of feeling unappreciated, Emma writes to "Dear Queenie," a canine advice columnist, who is always happy to suggest a solution. After several disastrous results, Queenie finally suggests to Emma ". . .A new career will get you off the couch and away from George's tirades." Before she knows it, Emma is a successful actor with a traveling theater company, and her troubles are far behind her. But there's just one problem. . . she misses George!

Find out how Emma solves her dilemma and works things out with George.

Where did you get the idea?:

This book was inspired by the sometimes fractious relationship between my husband, Ahren, and our dog, Emma. Emma really did lock herself in Ahren’s truck, just as she does in the story. She also climbs ladders, barks way too much, and unlike our cat, is a very good mouser. She eats anything except raw garlic, including tender asparagus shoots in the garden, Ahren’s seed potato crop and our cherry tomatoes. Her gourmet palate extends to cell phones, furtive helpings of Halloween candy, and of course, the trash.

Tidbits:

The illustrations:
This book is a 'comic-picture book'. Each of Emma's misadventures is told with comic strips, but the book is paced like a picture book—paying particular attention to what happens when the page turns. (The surprises should always happen when the page turns!)

The illustrations were done with a black ink line and water color.
